Description

R-Type Final 2 presents itself as a collection of war memories, research, and records. It explicitly follows Operation Last Dance, and the culmination of the R-99 Last Dancer. Interestingly, the pilot's name defaults to Jade Ross, the commander of R-Type Command, who is only otherwise name-dropped in Operation Bitter Chocolate. Reading into the context, Jade Ross could also be the pilot from the original R-Type.

The game is very heavy on customization; building on the basic color customization of R-craft in Final, Final 2 possesses customisation options for not only colors, but adds ship decals, a player model with customizable gender, suits, colors, and poses, and even a photo mode for the pilot and a chosen R-craft. Achieving any ending also unlocks the ability to customize the title-screen's name and stage courses. Stage names can also be changed.

Some ships from the Tactics entries also appear as unplayable background elements in stage 1, and play a more direct role in stage 7.1.

Story

Mission Brief

From the the R Manual:

Humanity has developed many weapons over the course of the Bydo invasion.

The Force, a truly indestructible weapon, realized through a convergence of harvested Bydo. The Wave Cannon, a weapon with the destructive power of a battleship's primary weapon, yet capable of being installed onto small-sized crafts.

A variety of Missiles, each developed to compliment the special characteristics of individual crafts. And the Bit, an artificial Force created to assist craft with an offensive defense.

The previous military operation, Last Dance, was initiated with the goal of developing a craft able to utilized all of theses weapons-the Ultimate Interchangeable Fighter. And once realized, humanity successfully struck the source of the Bydo.

The objectives of the current mission, R-TYPE FINAL 2, are to compile the military history of the war between humanity and the Bydo, and to pass down the know-how for anti-Bydo weapon development.

Yet unpublished military records and war memories are required over the course of this compilation. As new war records are still being discovered, we foresee that mission will stretch over a long period of time.

And so, in recognition of their achievements, those who complete a certain amount of compilation work in relation to this mission will be given the right to change the provisional "R-TYPE FINAL 2" title.

Over and out.

Craft History

A series of documents called Craft History can be viewed on the R Manual. As of November 25th, 2021, 16 Fighter biographies are available, with plans to double that number in the forthcoming update.

Game System

Difficulty

There are 7 levels of difficulty. The first five are available by default: PRACTICE, KIDS, NORMAL, BYDO, R-TYPER. The last two are unlockable:

  • R-TYPER 2 is unlocked when Stage 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 is cleared once on R-TYPER difficulty.
  • R-TYPER 3 is unlocked when Stage 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 is cleared once on R-TYPER 2 difficulty.

Apart from the Main Course, R-TYPER 2 and 3 difficulty can also be unlocked by clearing Stage 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 once on the respective difficulty in the Score Attack mode.

On PRACTICE difficulty, the fighter always starts with a Level 1 Force even when respawned from crashing.

Score System

The score modifier (as shown at the top right corner of the screen) is affected by the following factors:

  • Difficulty (LV1-7)
  • Rank (0-11)
    • The base rank is 0.
    • Each Laser Crystal increases the rank by 1 (up to 3).
    • Reaching 100% Dose increases the rank by 1, and using a Special Weapon decreases the rank by 1.
    • The rank is gradually increased as time goes by in the stage (up to 11).
    • Entering the next stage resets the rank to 0-4, based on the current Laser and Dose levels.
  • The maximum score modifier is +200% at LV7 (R-TYPER 3) Rank 11.

The player won't get score from time out during a boss battle.

Stages

Main Course

Stages 1-5 are always the same (unless changed through Course Editing). The last two stages are determined by what item pilots pick up from the enemy Junction in Stage 5.0, who drops four items when it appears. Picking up the gray object appears to lead to the same route as not picking up any of the objects at all.

The Developer Roadmap unveiled in the June 18th, 2021 YouTube Stream has revealed plans to add "Branching paths in the first half of the mission" as part of the Late Summer Update. These will allow the player to visit additional stages in the main course. This roadmap was later revised, delaying the update to "Late November ~ Early December".

7.2 Final Point: Center of the Planet Bydo Obsidian Pupil

Homage Stages Course

Homage Stages are DLC, taking stages from previous R-Type missions and remaking them for R-Type Final 2. They consist of their own course, separate from the Main Course, and feature differences from the source material. After each stage has been completed once, they're added to the Course Editing roster.

Score Attack Mode

In Score Attack mode, every individual stage can be played as long as they have been unlocked via clearing them in the Main/Homage Stages Course once. When playing an individual stage in the Score Attack Mode, the player's fighter starts with full powerups (Level 3 Red Laser, Level 2 Missile, and 2 Bit Devices).

The player can also create their Original Course by arranging the stages in any order (including Homage Stages), but as of the current version, only Stage 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 or X7.0 can be chosen as the Final Mission. Up to six Original Course can be saved.

Ships

Like in R-Type Final, the three starter fighters are R-9A Arrowhead, R-9D Shooting Star and R-9F Andromalius. Unlike the unlock methods in R-Type Final, R-Crafts are now crafted using Solonium, Etherium, and Bydogen, much like in the Tactics entries. These elements are earned through normal gameplay (higher difficulty comes with more rewards), though they can also be purchased in the in-game shop (albeit being limited quantities) using currency also earned from playing. Some ships require passwords and gameplay progression to unlock as well. Passwords of R-9A3 Lady Love and R-9B Strider have been announced on the R-Type Final 2 Kickstarter page.

Up to 12 fighters can be registered to use in the Hangar, with 60 more available on stand-by to replace any given slot in the R Craft Album.

As of Version 1.0.7 (PS4) currently, only 62 fighters are playable and unlockable. It has been revealed that the missing fighters will be added as free updates: the rest mech ships (except R-902 Ragnarok II), and BX-T Dantalion were set to drop in Early Summer, with the Bydo Series, Ultimate Fighters, and R-902 Ragnarok II, as well as "New Fighters" scheduled to be implemented in Late Summer.

As of November 25th, 2021, only the Mech series, OF Series, and R-13B have been released for all consoles. The first half of the Bydo series were set for release in "Mid October ~ Early November", and the rest of the Final 1 craft were scheduled for "Late November ~ Early December", but neither set has seen release, and the "New Fighters" listing has been removed from the roadmap entirely.

When launched, these updates will bring the total count back to the 101 found in the original Final, and exceed it with at least one new R-Series Fighter.

  • Remarkable R-TYPER - Cleared the Final Mission on R-TYPER 2 elite difficulty. You excel amongst your peers.
  • Incomparable R-TYPER - Cleared the Final Mission on R-TYPER 3 ultimate difficulty. No Bydo could ever defeat you.
  • Pilot Training Complete - You have confirmed the operations of the craft with the R Manual. It's time to move out!
  • Forever in the Annals of History - You have flown with various crafts and armaments. Usage rates reflect your individuality as a pilot.
  • Mission Command - You have switched the stages with the Original Course Editing feature. Let's get going!
  • Unleash the Force - You used a special weapon. Witness the power of the Force!
  • Fully Armed! - You fully upgraded your armaments and the DOSE gauge is at FULL.
  • Get Developing - You have resumed craft development. This will be an achievement for humanity.
  • Development Is IN OrD3r - Craft development has started. The plan is moving forward.
  • Development is n0T ComPl3te - You have developed multiple craft. The next thing is...
  • Dantalion's Flute - Witnessed an ominous trans-dimensional fighter during subspace travel.
    • Tips: This is unlocked when the player chooses an Original Course that doesn't start with Stage 1.0 or Stage X3.0 as the 1st Mission (choosing the Homage Stages Course also works), doesn't skip the demo (the first cutscene can be skipped). If it occurs, the navigator in the hangar will speak in an eerie way, and the player will come across the BX-T Dantalion that has a very low chance to appear in the last cutscene.
  • The Miracle of R - You have collected many records in the Gallery. In the future, these will tell the legend of R.
  • Nightmare of Human Invention - Much research on the Bydo has been completed at the Bydo Lab. We have learned...
  • Whenever, Wherever - You have been involved in 300 battles and fought with distinction.
  • Top Pilot - Absolutely outstanding! You've scored 1,000,000 points!
  • Good Night, Beast - You've defeated 10,000 Bydo. Bye-bye, Bydo!
  • POW Armor, Always in My Heart - You got 500 items from POW Armor. That is pow, pow, WOW!
  • Final Frontier of Fashion - You've obtained 30 Pilot Suits. That's a formidable wardrobe.
  • Abundant Research Resources - You've earned 100,000 R Points. I can't wait to see how you use them.
  • Let's Do This, Admiral! - You have been promoted to Admiral. But there is also an urgent communication...
  • Veteran Medalist - Your remarkable work has not gone unnoticed and you have amassed many medals.
  • Invincible Blow - Defeated 10 or more Bydo with one Wave Cannon blast.
  • Ultimate Blow - Fired a Wave Cannon with a GREAT gauge or better.
  • Across a Sea of Stars - Fought in various battles and fulfilled your missions.
  • Whirlwind on the Battlefield - Defeated a Huge Bydo in a blink of an eye.
  • Flawless R-TYPER - Started with a difficulty of R-TYPER or higher and cleared the Final Mission without crashing once. Unbelievable!
  • Third Bydo Mission - Re-experience III: records of humanity's third nightmare—a mission codenamed "The Third Lightning." (Stage X1.0)
  • Eden Paradox - Re-experience LEO: records of the "Eden Paradox" conflict that occurred in a parallel dimension. (Stage X2.0)
  • Mega W. Cannon - Brought Re-experience III to a close with the full-charge Mega W. Cannon's annihilating blast. (Stage X1.0)
    • Tips: Creature 666 must be finished with the 2 Loop charge of the Mega Wave Cannon.
  • A Worldline Without Force - Completed Re-experience LEO without equipping any Force, and bore witness to humanity's heroics. (Stage X2.0)
    • Tips: Continue is allowed (via setting Stage X2.0 as the 1st Mission in the Original Course) but still no Force should be obtained throughout the stage in order to unlock this achievement. The minimum difficulty is KIDS because PRACTICE always starts the game with a Force.
  • Demonic Rhapsody - Reliving-Δ: A record of the battles during the "Demonic Rhapsody" that took place on Earth. A tragedy caused by a former hero. (Stage X3.0)
    • "A former hero" in the description refers to the rescued R-9A Arrowhead piloted by the protagonist of R-Type, which gets infected by Bydo during the Bydo Seed Incident as known as "Satanic Rhapsody" in R-Type Delta.
  • First Bydo Mission / Anti-ship Warfare - Reliving-I: A record of the battles against the giant battleship in the so-called "First Bydo Mission". The hellfire was destroying the universe. (Stage X4.0)
  • The Essence of the Dose System - A special weapon was used to bring the curtain down on the "Reliving -Δ". Any attacks will come to nothing in the face of this weapon. (Stage X3.0)
    • Tips: The second Moritz-G from behind must be finished with the Delta Weapon. Moritz-G can't be destroyed by a Delta Weapon immediately so some damage must be done on it first.
  • Giant Battleship Reduced to Smithereens - The curtain came down on "Reliving-I" after destroying all the armed parts of the giant battleship. The flames of hell also died out. (Stage X4.0)
    • Tips: This includes destroyable parts on the Green Inferno's body itself.
  • Last Dance - Re-experience FINAL: records of the mission codenamed "Last Dance." The end to a long fought battle. (Stage X5.0)
  • Second Bydo Mission - Re-experience II: battle records of the "Second Bydo Mission." Shred the boundaries of reality. (Stage X6.0)
  • First Bydo Mission - Encounter - Re-experience I: battle records of the "First Bydo Mission." This is where it all began. (Stage X7.0)
  • Apex of Distorted Ecosystems - Brought Re-experience FINAL to a close by suppressing all kinds of strange lifeforms. (Stage X5.0)
  • High-speed Death Race - Pursued the highspeed giant Bydo in Re-experience II to the very end. Blink and you'll miss it. (Stage X6.0)
  • True Dopkera Buster - Destroyed the latching eyes in Re-experience I on R-TYPER difficulty or higher. The nightmare is over. (Stage X7.0)
  • Second Bydo Mission - Grotto - Re-Experience II: records of a battle with aquatic creatures on the Second Bydo Mission. (Stage Y1.0)
  • Virtual Space - Hologram Fight - Special Mission: battle records from the virtual space that has materialized due to Bydo Pollutants (Stage Y2.0)
  • Battle of Our Time - Re-experience II ends with the Diffusion W. Cannon defeating a giant Bydo in the grotto's depths. (Stage Y1.0)
  • Pod Shoot Striker - You completed the special mission by firing over 20 Pod shots at ships on HARD difficulty or higher! (Stage Y2.0)
  • Legendary R-TYPER - You've unlocked the complete R-TYPE FINAL 2 Achievements.
